Heartburn Causes & Effects
Heartburn is caused by acid from your stomach backing up into your esophagus. But what causes that acid to back up? That varies by person, but some of the most common triggers are below.
Food To Avoid
- Garlic and Onions
- Pepper and other spices
- Fried food
- Avocado, nuts and cheese
- Citrus fruits and juices
- Tomato-based foods, like spaghetti sauce, salsa,
chili, and pizza
- Drinks with caffeine or alcohol or any carbonated beverages (coffee, tea, soda, seltzer water)
- Mint flavorings
Avoid lying flat or bending over after eating.
Stress causes the esophagus to tighten and not close properly leaving it open and stomach acid backs up into the throat.
Smoking causes the esophagus to relax and not close properly leaving it open and stomach acid backs up into the throat.
Losing weight can take pressure off the stomach.
